In recent years, La Union has become everyone’s favorite go-to spot away from the city. Stressed? Depressed? But blessed? Whatever you may be feeling, a weekend trip to La Union is highly recommended.

We know for sure we’ll be heading to LU the next time we’re stressed from work. Below, we’ve listed down our 5 must do things when in La Union:

Surf, surf, surf!
What’s a visit to the surfing capital of the North if you don’t go surfing? The waves can be either calm or huge depending on the weather. Doesn’t matter if you’re a pro or a beginner, surfing is definitely a must!

There are several resorts in the area who offer surfing lessons for 400-500php/hour. It’s a must try for first-time visitors in La Union.

Go on a foodtrip!
There’s no doubt that La Union is a foodie paradise. The entire stretch of San Juan area is beaming with all sorts of food offerings ranging from Mexican, American, Filipino and Greek, etc. Whatever tickles your fancy, you can find it here in this lovely surftown.

A crowd favorite where the line is always endless is Tagpuan sa San Juan. We swear they have one of the best Beef Pares Rice Bowls we’ve ever had.

Have coffee (or two) at El Union
Undoubtedly the most famous coffee shop in La Union. They serve seriously good coffee and kick-ass grilled cheese! For the first timers, we recommend getting the Dirty Horchata. Horchata is a Hispanic drink made of rice milk, almonds, vanilla, cinnamon and other spices.

El Union “dirtied” it up by putting in a shot of espresso. This drink was sent from the coffee heavens! One glass is not enough.

Catch the LU sunset
One of the most beautiful sunsets we’ve ever witnessed is in San Juan, La Union. It varies from pastel-colored cotton candy skies to a deep orange and violet hue. It’s simply breathtaking.

Sit on the sand and listen to the waves as you watch the sun set and just let all that beauty take your troubles away.

Party like a local at Flotsam & Jetsam
After watching that glorious sunset, head on over to Flotsam and Jetsam to party the night away! It is the “it” place after sundown, tourists and locals alike flock here to dance and mingle with everyone. They have an awesome playlist which ranges from pop, classic OPM, dance and R&B.

Grab an ice cold beer while you’re at it and order their bestselling Margherita pizza. The perfect pairing.

If those 5 things can’t convince you to take that 5-hour drive up north, we don’t know what will! But take it from us, a trip to La Union, even a quick one, will always be a balm to your tired soul. See you here? ☀️
