When we learned that a franchise of Kushikatsu Daruma has opened in BGC, our hearts skipped a beat! What made us all the more giddy and excited was getting invited to its happy hour event launch last August 24!
Kushikatsu is a Japanese delicacy of deep-fried skewered veggies and meat. The restaurant is very famous in Osaka that serves the best kushikatsu in Japan.
While it seems plain and simple, five Filipino chefs of the franchise needed to fly to Japan and undergo a 1-month rigid training to perfect their batter, breading and frying techniques. The umami sauce that the skewers are served with, on the other hand, is regularly flown in from Osaka to Manila which means not even the franchisees know what it is made of! This seals an authentic Kushikatsu experience!
The restaurant serves 36 types of skewers ranging from the basic pork, beef and chicken meat to the exotic ones like chicken intestines and chicken heart. One can enjoy them on their own or with rice! To eliminate guessing which ones to order, they have the Beginner Level (9 sticks) and the Advanced Level (11 sticks) sets.
At first, we thought we’d have a hard time biting thru the skewers, but to our surprise, not only did they taste good, they made us crave for more rice! Yum!
Rice bowls are also on the menu ranging from Php295-330 with authentic Japanese rice to boot. We had the Karaage Bowl and Classic Chicken Teriyaki, both of which we truly enjoyed!
Happy hour is during weekdays, 4-9pm serving buy-one-take-one Chu Hais (carbonated or alcoholic drinks) at Php280 and marked-down local beers at Php50 a bottle.
We were able to try the Matcha Chu Hai and the Mikan Chu Hai, both true to their taste!
Kanpai and no double dipping!!
